Auto: Russian licenses are safest with an IDP, Spanish translation; police checks and mountain roads make paperwork worth it. Rentals are about $30-75/day for Yaris, Sail, Logan class and $75-150+ for SUVs near Andes, desert routes. Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile crossings are rarely allowed without special permits and insurance; domestic altitude and road closures are the bigger issue.
