Auto: A Russian license generally needs an IDP, English translation for clean short-stay driving; rental desks are strict. Rentals are expensive and limited, roughly $80-180/day for compact Toyota, Honda, Tesla-class cars, and public transport is usually better. Border, crossing note: driving into mainland China or Macao is not a normal rental option because permits, plates and insurance are specialized.

• Outer Hills & Islands: Green hills, trailheads, fishing villages, beaches and slower edges outside the core. Greener mountainous terrain and coastal islands with slightly cooler air, forest trails and ferry-linked communities. Rainfall remains frequent year-round.
